  • The 3 Series long-wheelbase variant will give BMW an edge in the segment that includes the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE and the Audi A4 and Volvo S60 scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2021..

Last month we reported that BMW intends to launch the 3 Series long-wheelbase in India. The company has now confirmed that the LWB variant will go on sale in India on January 21, 2021, as the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine. The 3 Series LWB has, until now, been restricted to the Chinese market only.

The BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine adds 110mm to the wheelbase along with 43mm extra rear legroom. Aside from an increase in overall length, the long-wheelbase version is visually identical to the regular 3 Series on sale in India. Inside, the rear seats and the headrests boast improved cushioning and since the focus is on the rear seat, the 3 Series Gran Limousine is also expected to get ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof to help uplift the overall ambience of the rear compartment.

The increased wheelbase translates to a 43mm increment in rear legroom in the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine.

The BWM 3 Series GT has been quite popular with Indian buyers, particularly those who prefer being chauffeured around owing to its more spacious rear compartment relative to the regular sedan. However, with the arrival of the G20 3 Series, BMW announced that the GT variant will go off air. The 3 Series Gran Limousine will help fill the void left by the departure of the 3 Series GT and will also help give BMW an edge over its rivals which include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE currently, soon to be joined by the new Audi A4 in January and the Volvo S60 in March.

Expect BMW to offer the 3 Series LWB with the same engine options as the 3 Series currently on sale - 2.0-litre diesel with 190bhp and 400Nm and 2.0-litre petrol with 258bhp and 400Nm. The BMW 3 Series long wheelbase is expected to be priced at around Rs 45 to 50 lakh (ex-showroom).
